Pagkatapos obserbahan ang may matatapang na kulay na mga kambas nila Henri Matisse, André Derain, Albert Marquet, Maurice de Vlaminck, Kees van Dongen, Charles Camoin, at Jean Puy sa Salon d'Automne ng 1905, kinutyang “fauves” ng kritikong si Louis Vauxcelles ang mga pintor. Dito hango ang pangalang Fauvism, inilarawan ni Vauxcelles ang kanilang mga trabaho sa pariralang “Donatello chez les fauves” (“Donatello among the wild beasts”), pagkumpara ng kanilang “orgie of tones” sa isang iskulturang may istilong Renaissance na kahati nila sa kwarto ng kanilang eksebisyon. Hindi Fauve si Henri Rousseau, pero ang kanyang malaking eksena sa gubat The Hungry Lion Throws Itself on the Antelope ay nakalagay malapit sa trabaho ni Matisse at maaaring may impluwensya sa kritisismo at kutyang ginamit. Ang komentaryong iyon ni Vauxcelles ay naka-imprinta sa Oktubre 17 1905 Gil Blas, isang dyaryo, at naging popular na gamit. Ang Neo-Impressionist landscape ni Matisse, Luxe,Calme et Volupté, ay naka-eksibit na sa Salon des Independendants ng spring ng 1905.
