Pagkatapos obserbahan ang may matatapang na kulay na mga kambas nila Henri Matisse, André Derain, Albert Marquet, Maurice de Vlaminck, Kees van Dongen, Charles Camoin, at Jean Puy sa Salon d'Automne ng 1905, kinutyang “fauves” ng kritikong si Louis Vauxcelles ang mga pintor.
