Pagkatapos obserbahan ang may matatapang na kulay na mga kambas nila Henri Matisse, André Derain, Albert Marquet, Maurice de Vlaminck, Kees van Dongen, Charles Camoin, at Jean Puy sa Salon d'Automne ng 1905, kinutyang “fauves” ng kritikong si Louis Vauxcelles ang mga pintor. Dito hango ang pangalang Fauvism, inilarawan ni Vauxcelles ang kanilang mga trabaho sa pariralang “Donatello chez les fauves” (“Donatello among the wild beasts”), pagkumpara ng kanilang “orgie of tones” sa isang iskulturang may istilong Renaissance na kahati nila sa kwarto ng kanilang eksebisyon.
