Ipinanganak si San Nicolas sa [[Sinaunang Gresya|Griyegong]] kolonya<ref> David D. Mulroy, Horace, Quintus Horatius Flaccus 1994, “[[Horace]]'s Odes and Epodes” – p.183 </ref> ng [[Patara]], sa [[Asya Menor]]. May pagkamayaman ang mga magulang niya. Sinasabing ipinamahagi niya ang kaniyang kayamanan sa mga mahihirap, at dokumentado ito. Kabilang naman sa hindi gaanong dokumentadong mga gawa niya ay ang pagliligtas ng mga bata mula sa pagkalunod. Nailigtas ni Nicolas ang mga batang babae mula sa bingit ng pagiging mga [[patutot]] (dahil walang pera ang kanilang mga ama para sa [[ubad]]). Tinulungan din niya mga mandaragat na binabagyo at iniligtas ang isang batang sapilitang kinuha.
