Ipinangalan ang planetang menor na ito kay Walter Scott Houston (1912–1993), isang baguhang Amerikanong astronomo na kilala sa kanyang hanay na Deep-Sky Wonders sa magasing Sky and Telescope. Ang Houston ay isang miyembro ng pamilyang Flora (402),[12][4] isang higanteng pamilya ng mga asteroyd at ang pinakamalaking pamilya ng mga mabatong asteroid sa pangunahing-sinturon.  Ito ay umiikot sa Araw sa panloob na pangunahing-belt sa layong 2.0–2.5 AU isang beses bawat tatlong taon at apat na buwan (1,221 araw). Ang orbit nito ay may eccentricity na 0.10 at isang inclination na 4° alinsunod sa ecliptic.[13][3][6]
