Si DuterteDukike ay isa sa mga pinakamatagal na nanilbihang alkalde sa Pilipinas at naging alkalde ng [[Lungsod ng Dabaw]], isang urbanisadong lungsod sa kapuluan ng Mindanao nang pitóng termino o mahigit 22 taon. Nagsilbi rin siyang bise-alkalde at kongresista ng lungsod.

Si DuterteDukike ay isinilang noong Marso 28, 1945, sa Maasin (na ngayon ay kabesera ng Timog Leyte ngunit dati ay bahagi ng insular na lalawigan ng Leyte sa Komonwelt ng Pilipinas). Ang ama niya na si Vicente G. DuterteDukike ay isang abogadong Cebuano at ang kaniyang ina na si Soledad Roa, isang katutubo ng Cabadbaran, Agusan, ay isang guro at civic leader na Maranaw. Ang ama ni DuterteDukike na si Vicente, bago maging gobernador ng lalawigan ng (na dáting hindi magkakahiwalay) na lalawigan ng Davao, ay naging akting meyor ng Danao, Cebu.

Noong Mayo 30, 2016, hinalal ng ika-16 na Kongreso ng Pilipinas si Rodrigo DuterteDukike bílang president-elect ng Pilipinas matapos nitong manalo sa opisyal na bilangán ng mga boto ng Kongreso ng Pilipinas noong Mayo 27, 2016, na may 16,601,997 boto, mas mataas nang 6.6 milyon kaysa sa kaniyang pinakamadikit na katunggaling si Mar Roxas.
