Salitang Tagalog na Galing Aleman

I would doubt that many, if not most, of the words presented actually come from German. From what I know, these words have already been part of the core lexicon of Tagalog and other Philippine languages even before any element of the Germanic languges reached the islands. Could it be that these apparent cognates are no more than coincidences?

What I know for sure though is that sundalo comes, by way of Spanish, from the German Soldat. =D —Život 09:32, August 8, 2005 (UTC)

Someone asked in the German Wikipedia if there words were right. I corrected some of them, and here are some Notes as well. Thanky for the english translation, by the way, as I don't know any Tagalog . Greetings from German, Silberchen

It's not "gnadig" but "gnädig" with umlauted a. But more generally: Which historical events made Tagalog being flooded (as it seems) by German words? German pre-WW1 colonies were a bit far away... --84.154.155.132 21:11, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the correction of "gnädig", I didn't see that one. 84.154.155.132 or anyone, do you understand "gessint"? Could be gesinnt, for several translations please see [1] None of them is "ready"... -- Silberchen

A lot of these German words also have cognates in Yiddish and, I assume, other High German dialects. The fact that a lot of the words listed are core words would suggest that there had been extensive intermingling between German and Filipino peoples, either in the Philippines or in Central Europe. Although, yeah, that would be a bit too far-fetched. Plus the cultural element is missing; such a long time of living together would necessarily entail cultural diffusion between the two groups which, quite frankly, isn't very evident. —Život 09:12, August 24, 2005 (UTC)

The german word "gewahren" is correctly spelled "gewähren" with an umlauted a. "bund/bundnis" should be "Bund/Bündnis". "Bund" has several meanings, see de:Bund. "Bündnis" with an umlauted u means "alliance" -- 87.122.9.193 18:57, 24 October 2005 (UTC) (de:Benutzer:Sciurus)
