Nope. Any autoconfirmed user can move pages (I think?). If you can't move pages yet, wait for a few days and continue editing (4 days, at least 50 edits) to earn that status. --Sky Harbor (usapan) 07:30, 15 Mayo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

Roel, while I appreciate your edits to the article cited in the section header, I do not appreciate you reverting the works of other editors without reason and circumventing Tagalog Wikipedia policy simply to make things "easier to read". Please understand that it has always been both custom and, since 2007, policy at the Tagalog Wikipedia to translate terms, even technical or scientific ones (despite what the KWF says), for the benefit of people to know what these terms are to better-preserve the language in light of the growing influence of Taglish, of course with translations in italics and enclosed in parentheses. If you have issues with the Tagalog Wikipedia's language policies, please raise them in the Kapihan instead. Thanks. --Sky Harbor (usapan) 15:35, 6 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

The KWF is the authority in the language, and not wiki, this is the reason why we should have the convention I'm proposing so as not to put in the hands of people without authority to speak regarding the language. Preservation does not mean rejection of foreign terminologies, language grows including accommodation of foreign terminologies. And I have to see any publication which will confirm the matter you intend to write it. --Scorpion prinz 23:02, 6 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
We abide by the KWF's pronouncements with one difference: in the tradition of Lope K. Santos, we believe that a language can express any term, no matter how scientific or technical it is, without having to overly rely on borrowing and, most especially, without having to fall back on English especially if there are acceptable terms in the lexicon. The KWF as an institution has been very weak in propping up the the existing lexicon despite whatever the Gabay sa Ortograpiyang Filipino says, and while you may argue that the loss of older terms in Tagalog/Filipino is language being progressive, we who crafted the policy view that it is not after extensive discussion on the issue: Taglish is nowhere near the "Filipino language" the KWF wants it to be, and the Tagalog Wikipedia's policies reflect that because we think that terms like oksiheno, Aleman and tipaan are not archaic given our interpretation of the 2008/2009 Ortograpiya, and can easily be accommodated into the lexicon.
It is likewise part and parcel of the Tagalog Wikipedia's language policies to reintroduce terms lost to Filipinos, especially technical and scientific ones, so that they may see re-use in the lexicon, and so that they may not be lost given the influence of Taglish. We see nothing wrong with the KWF's pronouncements on the issue; it's just that we interpret the Ortograpiya differently so that we can prevent Taglish from becoming too influential as the KWF, despite being the language authority, has allowed it to be. Previous discussions on the English Wikipedia (as you have participated in) have shown that the KWF has been weak in determining what "Filipino" is as a language distinct from Tagalog. And this is from a moderate talking: there are also purists on the Tagalog Wikipedia who might view this differently that I do. --Sky Harbor (usapan) 00:30, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
That doesn't reflect the evolution of a language. I would agree with you on this, if English still uses thy, thou, hast and the likes. But no. What should be reflected is the way language has adapted to the current modern vernacular. Aleman yes but it doesn't mean that using "German" will make it not part of the language. Give me someone with a clear mandate rather than mere ideology. You are contradicting yourself when you use the Filipino alphabet when it in fact uses the alphabet prescribed by the KWF. --Scorpion prinz 00:36, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
I don't see how I've contradicted myself when the alphabet is not in discussion here: the policy realizes the inability of Abakada to effectively express terms in Tagalog, and that is addressed in Wikipedia:Pamantayang abakada at pagbabaybay. Besides, who exactly has a clear mandate? The UP-SWF, for example, is so influential in itself that its pronouncements certainly have the ability to circumvent the KWF: they still use Filipino even when the KWF says we have to use Pilipino. --Sky Harbor (usapan) 00:47, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
Pagbabaybay sa abakada applies when a Spanish word is spelled in Filipino. Glad you cited UP-SWF, and they were the ones who came up with publications, which liberally used English terms spelled in Filipino, which is congruent with the guidelines set by the KWF, which either recommends to spell it in its Filipino baybayin equivalent or retain their English spelling. If you stick with pure Tagalog, which has assimilated Spanish, I don't see any reason why it can't assimilate English and other languages too. --Scorpion prinz 01:16, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

(indent) Uh... I'm not well-versed with the linguistics and stuff but in biology it is preferred to use the scientific name of the species to avoid confusion and preserve clarity versus common names which could vary a lot even in the same country.

Perhaps we could use this set-up instead?

  1. If there is only one undisputed Tagalog term for the species (like Tamaraw) then we use the Tagalog term.
  2. If there are more species known to have the same name, we use a dab page (like Bangaw).
  3. If there are no local names (or an accurate and undisputed translation) in the first place then we use the scientific name like Nematoda. --Lenticel (usapan) 01:29, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
Scientific and technical terms in English can be retained, so much so for words in English which do not have direct Tagalog translation, then it must be liberally used, to spell it in Filipino baybayin is something we need to discuss further.--Scorpion prinz 02:04, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
<reply> So per number 3, should we move the article to Nematoda? Nematodes will remain on the lede and still be a redirect.--Lenticel (usapan) 06:07, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
The proposal being discussed above is the existing policy, albeit one that is driven more on custom than on paper. On liberal borrowing: I did not discount borrowing from English and other languages, and neither does the policy. However, we follow the KWF's borrowing guidelines strictly: only when there is no direct term in Tagalog (or if the term is translateable but the meaning is lost), and the Spanish term is unheard of, can we then resort to using English in italics. The policy never discriminates borrowing in its entirety, but rather encourages responsible borrowing because formal, encyclopedic Tagalog should never be equated to Taglish, and people should have some sense of looking at a dictionary to find a term rather than lazily borrowing from English because we don't want to take the effort to find a word in a Tagalog dictionary. --Sky Harbor (usapan) 03:04, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
Taglish for me is when you on and off switch to English to express a statement. However in the absence of terminologies with an exact equivalent in Tagalog then we must incorporate the foreign word. After carefully checking out diversity which could somehow mean magkakaiba in Tagalog however that translation is closer to difference than diversity itself. Should it mean, that to make it look Tagalized/Filipinized, that we should spell it as dayversiti? --Scorpion prinz 03:12, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
There's the Tagalog-derived pagkakaiba-iba and the Spanish-derived dibersidad. Spelling non-Spanish terms in Filipino spelling has been abolished with the abolition of the 2001 Revisyon sa Ortograpiya ng Wikang Filipino, but as per the Tagalog Wikipedia's policy, you can use English terms only when the term can't be translated into Tagalog and the Spanish equivalent is not part of the lexicon, and with the use of italics, as it has always been per the custom of the Tagalog Wikipedia. --Sky Harbor (usapan) 03:25, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
Using diversity then fits the bill, pagkakaiba-iba still doesn't come close to the spirit of diversity itself.--Scorpion prinz 03:32, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
Not quite. If there are Tagalog-language sources which use pagkakaiba-iba as "diversity", then it's valid. If not, there's still dibersidad, as it is part of the lexicon. There's also kaibhan from Calderon's English-Tagalog-Spanish dictionary. There's a whole list of dictionaries cited in WP:SALIN, encompassing Tagalog, Pilipino and Filipino and, in turn, expressing the differing points of view of the authors. Finally, I believe pagkakaiba-iba in time became "diversity" due to calquing. --Sky Harbor (usapan) 03:37, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
All those you cited comes closer to difference. I'm sorry but you would have to provide me any Tagalog dictionary that actually uses dibersidad? If these would have to follow the way you see/use it, then you will not be able to convey the intent of the articles, that is to inform, rather than keep the reading mind-boggled.--Scorpion prinz 03:47, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
Sagalongos uses pagkakaiba-iba for "diversity". Remember that calquing (giving existing words new meanings) takes place in Tagalog as well. Where the meaning of a word can be ambiguous, the English translation is included in italics and enclosed in parentheses for clarity. "May malawakang pagkakaiba-iba (diversity) ang lahing Pilipino", for example, is an accepted practice. I'm going to the Ateneo later and I can check on dibersidad while I'm there. --Sky Harbor (usapan) 04:01, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
I don't have the intent to make the article Shakespearean, needing writers/readers alike to go research further for the meaning of a word just for them to comprehend.--Scorpion prinz 04:17, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
I don't see how using terms which are in the lexicon became Shakespearean. These terms were in the lexicon as recently as 20-40 years ago and were lost simply because Taglish became widespread. The policies go so far as ensuring that readers won't be confused: the community has seen no issues with it so far. --Sky Harbor (usapan) 04:55, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

Taglish as I pointed out is the consistent switching to English of Tagalog statements and not mere words which do not have equivalents in Tagalog. How did teacher become accepted to be titser (this in particular has a direct Tagalog equivalent, but nevertheless it is accepted), nurse to nars, etc. All derived from English it just took time for it to be frequently used before they came to be accepted. I don't see the reason why Tagalog Wikipedia should not be the catalyst for the integration of foreign terminologies into the vernacular, especially in the clear absence of the local language equivalent. I stand firm in the need to broaden the acceptance of terminologies in foreign languages.--Scorpion prinz 05:16, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

Because it (enriching the language) is outside our purview. Allow me to quote Eugene from four years ago:

Why am I emphasizing the KWF? Here's why: While the Constitution says that "as [Filipino] evolves, it shall be further developed and enriched on the basis of existing Philippine and other languages" it does not mean that we, as Filipino citizens, can do our own developing and enriching. No, no, no. There has to be an implementing/enabling law. (That's why we have this huge brouhaha over how to amend the constitution by people's initiative. There is no enabling law for this mode of constitutional amendment and that's why various "people's initiatives" have failed.)

The policy clearly states that it can be superseded by any consistent, sustained practice by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, something which we obviously do not have at the moment. --Sky Harbor (usapan) 05:52, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
Voila, nice citation, however incomplete. I just want to stress, when I pointed out that we utilize Tagalog Wikipedia as the catalyst for incorporating these terminologies, it should be understood to be in the context that conforms to the what KWF provides, na kinikilala ang varayti ng pagbabaybay ng mga salita. They have a clear mandate when it was established or should I say reconstituted in 1991 (kindly check Section 14), from being the Surian ng Wikang Pambansa to KWF. And should you invoke again Philippine language institutions of universities in the Philippines, including the Sentro ng Wikang Filipino of UP, I urge you to read their publications in Filipino, to the extent that they use sosyal sayans when referring to as you could have guessed social science. UP-SWF is not alone Philippine Normal University (Department of Lingguistics, Bilingual Studies and Literature) also has had publications that reflect these.--Scorpion prinz 06:14, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
Let me also just add, we shall not supplement the functions of KWF. We shall conform and derive our usage/spellings from their guidelines, that is not to be Taglish, but clearly just assimilating whatever is missing in our language.--Scorpion prinz 06:18, 7 Hunyo 2011 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

Wikipedia in FilipinoBaguhin

Hi! I've seen that you've edited the Wikipedia in Filipino at the Incubator. I don't speak the language but I am willing to help with categories, images and templates. Would you like to continue with the project? Do you know where can I find a dictionary of Filipino in the internet? Thanks for your time. Chabi1

I've realized there's no actual distinction grammar wise between Filipino and Tagalog. The two languages are I would say 99% intelligible, with only an exception of a few terms or words in Filipino. I would compare it to the Castillian language and Spanish language being one in the same. -- Namayan 00:34, 29 Setyembre 2014 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

Could you possibly help? 02:09, 24 Setyembre 2014 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

Some of the article in the category need expansion, like The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, Bambi, and Dumbo. Others like The Rescuers might need a grammar check too. Also needing translation help are Victorious and Charlotte's Web 2: Wilbur's Great Adventure. And finally, I believe Charlotte's Web (pelikula ng 1973) should be moved to Charlotte's Web (1973 na pelikula) to match Beauty and the Beast (1991 na pelikula). 05:22, 25 Setyembre 2014 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

Republikang TsekoBaguhin

--Lenticel (usapan) 06:27, 29 Enero 2015 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

Leo English "Tagalog-English" at "English-Tagalog" dictionaries).

Leogregoryfordan (makipag-usap) 05:23, 28 Marso 2016 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

Bill = panukalang batas, hindi pa pumapasa. -- Namayan 05:24, 28 Marso 2016 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

Salamat! JWilz12345 (makipag-usap) 10:54, 29 Agosto 2017 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

Republic of the PhilippinesBaguhin

Leogregoryfordan (makipag-usap) 11:26, 20 Oktubre 2017 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

Leogregoryfordan (makipag-usap) 02:55, 21 Oktubre 2017 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

Sa aling probisyon tahasang sinasabi na ang opisyal na pangalan ng Pilipinas ay 'Republic of the Philippines'. Nakasulat nga ito bilang Republic of the Philippines sa konstitusyon, pero hindi isinasaad na opisyal itong pangalan. -- Namayan 04:26, 21 Oktubre 2017 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

Help with articlesBaguhin

There has been some recent vandalism to certain articles, such as Lady and the Tramp. I bring this article up as an example because of the fact that the word "tramp" has at least two distinct meanings in English. Here, it means a homeless person. What I do not know is if the article is using the right translation for the word. "Tramp" also refers to a prostitute in English. The film is not about that. It is about a female American Cocker Spaniel named Lady who lives with a refined, upper-middle-class family, and a male stray mongrel called the Tramp. Also, Liv and Maddie got a new title for its fourth season. The new title is Liv and Maddie: Cali Style. One edit noted that it was titled Liv and Maddie: Cali Style in its fourth season, but did not translate this fact into Filipino. I assume that the translation would be Liv at Maddie: Estilo California in Filipino. However, it needs the rest of the sentence translated as well. Finally, there is the fact that some articles like Charlotte's Web 2: Wilbur's Great Adventure and Dove Cameron are using machine translation in them. Also, some articles like Sanjay and Craig are short, although that show is actually a really bad show, but it is still notable. It should note that "The show is about a 12-year-old boy named Sanjay Patel who owns a talking pet snake named Craig." Pretty much all of these articles are better in English than they are here. I am asking for assistance in these articles as I am only a basic speaker of Filipino. However, I will get help for the really big stuff if I can. Some articles are missing here and need to be created, like for example Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (pelikula noong 1937), Disney's first film. I will create that article, but I will need help for the translations of statements like "It was the first film produced by Walt Disney". For now, I need help, but later I can get more help because at my mom's hospital there are people who can speak Filipino, but I won't be going there for another week or so, since I am at my grandma's house currently. But for now, I would like the statements about Liv and Maddie, Sanjay and Craig, Lady and the Tramp, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs translated if you can, along with the proper Filipino translation for the word "tramp" as in homeless person. Thank you. Kkjj (makipag-usap) 17:42, 16 Nobyembre 2017 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

These articles are also machine translations:

There doesn't seem to be a category for restaurants. Should there be one? I just put the category for Estados Unidos instead. 2602:306:83A9:3D00:551E:23EC:7C8F:740F 05:16, 2 Disyembre 2017 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]

After doing some searching, I found restawran for restaurant. Therefore, I will work on these articles myself. I'm still working on these articles with machine translations. Kkjj (makipag-usap) 08:34, 4 Disyembre 2017 (UTC)Reply[sumagot]
I finished what I could do, but feel free to make further fixes if you can. I still haven't found the right word for "tramp" in Filipino yet. Although after thinking about it, I wonder if it could be translated as "The lady and the vagabond", like the Spanish title (La dama y el vagabondo).
